Armies of more or less equal size are always a gamble.
To be on the safe side you need to bring an army at least 1.5 times bigger or so.
Say, 35k against 25k, and only a few troops will survive (or do some trial and error).
Rage, yeah, no one said war was going to make you happy, nor is any cheap, let alone easy.
I lose interest in this game when i spend 6000 geos on a army to attack a small island. And then lose all my troops. I Now have 152 geos total......
the trick is(as hard as it may be) not to spend 6k untill you have something like 40,50,60k or in some cases 100`ks...that way 6 k is your daily income and you could spend that everday and lose no money.......the saving part right at the start of a round is what kills of most new players....
