Although I shouldn't help you improve your jewelling times , I will try.

You should optimze your WLAN connection, so try out the following:

1. Use a WLAN channel that is 5 channels away from the next one in use.
2. Turn around your antenna (if you don't have an omni-directional one)
3. Try another antenna.
4. Increase tx power if possible (there's some 3rd party firmware for some routers which allows this)
5. Check for interrupting devices such as dect phones or microwaves.

From my experience WLAN is always tricky. Even if you have good signal quality that doesn't mean anything. With optimal hardware and surrounding conditions you may achieve 30% of the theoretical speed. That means with g standard (54 Mbit/s) you may get 16 mbit/s maximum.
The real thing is always different. Even the air humidity has negative influence.

You might also try installing noscript for firefox. So only the necessary things will be loaded. That should improve response times.

I use a Netgear RangeMax DGN router. (has both hardwire and wireless, both used)
It has no external antenna nor a socket to employ one.

I have installed no script and will see how that pans out.

Thanks for the tips. (do ya think I need a new router? )

Do you still get this when you're in the same room as your wireless router?

Have you got the wireless router that BT provide? If so, is it the black one or the white one?

I'm on BT too, although I live in a large town, rather than a village. I get 7.95 meg of the potential 8 meg on offer so I can't complain really. However, BT are renowned for poor quality lines and service in rural areas, and by rural, I mean anything other than a major town or city.

Also depends on some other factors such as quality of cabling to the exchange. Years back in an effort to save money, BT started running aluminium cables rather than copper. If this is the case in your area, again you won't get 8 meg as they advertise. In addition, rural exchanges had any investment in them cut in 2009, again with cost saving as the motivation.

Distance from the exchange is also a factor. If you're in a village, odds are you're probably 5 miles or more from the exchange which will also mean you won't ever get 8 meg.

Finally, line contention can also be a factor. It depends how many residences in your area are with ISP's that use BT infrastructure (which most do). Again, with all the factors above at play in addition to this contention issue, it's likely that there are simply too many people trying to send/receive data down a comms line that can't handle it. This is another common problem outside of major towns and cities.

Do you get these issues on any other sites at all?

Do you run any adblocker or script block plugins?

Are you running anti-malware/spyware applications?

What AV application do you use?

Sounds like you need to change your Wireless Channel as KD said. If too many other wireless networks around you use the same one, it will cause interference. This is typically demontrated by a low wireless signal even when in the same room as the router such as you're getting.

Tony - Try what is suggested above before shelling out money for a new router. Netgear, whilst a cheaper brand, is perfectly sufficient for a home user and your issues at this point don't sound like router issues as such to me. With a change of wireless channel, you might find your signal strength improves instantly. Also, your problems with GEWar definitely don't sound like they are router related.

Right here we go,

I changed my channel and the signal strength has improved to 3 donwstairs by the TV where I have my laptop.

I have installed no script, that has got rid of the push/pull page refresh.

In the game, the footer ads are now in the footer and not across the page obliterating my view of what cities I have. (Wont know if this will change should I get over ten cities increasing the page size I will know)

All browswers push and pull content, mostly when there are google ads on a page or elements with changing content. Certainly GEWar was the worse of those that did it. (My own forum did it to some extent).
I can report though that the noscript err script, seems to have cut it down dramatically so far.

In as far as me and BT. I am in a villiage biut live 2.8 miles from the exchange. I pay for 8mbps but my speed checker say at my laptop I am getting download now of 5328 kbps upload of 1015 kbps with one tester and 4130/1062 with another. So the truth will be somewhere between the two.

I have the Black BT Home Hub but I have been told that my Netwgear is a far better router than the BT unit...Opinions guys?

A good sign. How far is your router from the downstairs location? Same room? Router is upstairs? Router in a different room on same floor?

Sounds like a potential issue with your PC and the Google Ads script that runs, most likely due to AV or anti-malware/spyware solutions installed. Could be wrong, but a problem I've seen more than once is where installed security solutions see the http://www.google-analytics.com/ga.js script as malicious or suspect, or they are trying to scan/deal with it causing a slowdown. When this happens, it results in that constant activity you describe. The script itself is nothing to worry about, very common on the internet these days and Luke needs the revenue generated from ads. However, some security solutions are very sensitive around scripts like this and cause performance issues. With the NoScript plugin in place then it will stop the ga.js script even being executed so you should continue to see the improvement, however it also stops ALL scripts from running so you'll notice some of the nice GEWar tables etc disappearing too. You may also notice changes on other sites if they have functionality that is provided by scripts.

Sounds about right for your distance from the exchange. Also, you'll be paying for a slyly worded "up to" 8 meg service. There's a lot of press around this in the UK at the moment, with regulatory authorities attempting to force through changes meaning ISP's have to advertise average connection speeds, not "up to" speeds that are rarely delivered.

I'd stick with your Netgear for now, see how you go. I'd say the results you've seen from what you've tried so far clearly indicates it isn't a router problem.

.
Not sure I am with you all the way on this one RM.
GEW backbone is php 5 (?) based on the forum being vb 3.7.6
I run vb 4.1.2 licences and have a google ad account for the same reason.

The same script is used and I don't have a problem other than when GEWar city legend has more thazn ten cities in it.
Next time it happens I will do a screen capture and show you what I mean.

Where abouts in the UK are you? I am down south near Bristol

Like I said, I could be wrong haha. What you were describing just sounded very like a problem we had at work with the Google Ads script being caught by our AV solution. When that happened, the browser just kept trying to run the script over and over, until eventually it would either time out and give up, or the browser crashed. If it's not this then the admins will hopefully be able to find the root of the issue if you get screenshots. Definitely sounds like a script based problem to me though if NoScript has helped alleviate the issues.

I'm south UK too, right on the coast in Dorset.
