View Full Version : Ban or Mute
While in the pokerrooms the last couple of days, I noticed from players that the are still unsure whether they dare to post anything, being affraid of a ban.
So I'll make it clear again when you can get a ban:
Some time ago we decided to split the forum from the game. Thus meaning that one can not be banned for saying anything, unless it's deaththreats, racism, stalking(of female gewar players for example) and just stuff that is officially illegal.
Example: you want to swear at an admin or mod...this results in a mute, not a ban.
You are going crazy on the forums or pm's: mute(first time a temp-mute as usual).
Ofcourse if you cheat(that is:multiple accounts, scripting or abusing a hole) in the game or are trying to cheat, you can still be banned.
The downside of a mute is that you can't use the PM function either. Communication then has to go through your own forums or alliance messages.
These rules count for both gewar.net and gewar.co.uk.
There is also something like a hard-mute. If you are muted on the forums, but you still can't behave(example: bank-messages, army messages and alliance messages) then you can get a hard mute. In that case you will have to use your own forums to communicate. This hardly ever happens.
In any case of a mute, you are still able to settle 'stuff' with mods and admins through the helpdesk. We want more players, not to scare them away. Gewar is supposed to be a game that also belongs to the players, and nobody should therefor be scared that what they say on the forums can result in a ban from the game itself. We only have to reinforce some rules to keep the game fun for other players as well, and also for the crew who are working here for free.
Hope it is clear and any questions can be posted here.
Have fun.

I don't think we have a mute feature on co.uk.
Check if players can still play when put on COPPA mode :). Thats we did here in the beginning. It's a usergroup that doesn't allow posting or PM'ing.
From an old thread which may help too!
There are several ways that you can be banned from the forum, the game, or both.
Types of bans
Forum ban: Also known as being Muted. You can still play the game, but your forum account is suspended. You can't post and your profile is inaccessible.
Temporary ban: You are banned from the forum and the game for a specific period of time. You can access neither your game nor forum account. You can't post or take part in the game.
Lifetime ban (a.k.a. Perm Ban): Your account is permanently banned, your armies are all reduced to 1 troop and all your assets are removed.
IP ban: For those persistent types who decide to create a new account when their old one is banned, we have an IP address ban. Your computer's IP address is added to a list that keeps you from accessing the forum or the game. And for those of you using proxies, just know that we have your *real* IP address too.
What Can Get You Banned?
Behavior/Language
Rude language, threats, profanity and racial epithets are not tolerated. The first time gets you a warning. Depending on the circumstances, subsequent offenses could earn you anything form a forum ban to a lifetime ban. This goes for behavior in chat and PMs as well.
Forum Spam
Pointless posts, gibberish, meaningless drivel and posting for the sole purpose of raising your post count is annoying and could get you muted temporarily or earn you a temporary forum ban. If you keep it up, you'll earn more and longer temporary bans until you work your way up to a permanent ban.
Helpdesk Spam
Posting dozens of copies of the same question or reply in the Helpdesk will get you muted temporarily or earn you a temporary forum ban. One additional offense and you'll earn a longer temporary ban. It's a very short path to a permanent ban.
Scripting and other cheating
Read the post on scripting and cheating to understand what it is. The punishment depends on the circumstances of the offense. The first offense could earn you a temporary ban with your armies deleted and all your assets removed. More serious offenses will result in a lifetime perm ban, and all your armies and assets will be lost.
Harassing People In Real Life
Any unwanted contact in real life is grounds for banning. There is a clearly-defined line between online and real life. If you cross that line (harassing phone calls to a player, a player's family, friends, coworkers or acquaintences; physical contact; stalking; snail mail; etc.) you will be permanently banned and the authorities in your area may be contacted. Yes, you could go to jail for taking a game too far, and we take this very seriously.
Sharing Your Account
Sharing your account with somebody else is a definite no-no. If you are going to be unable to access your account for an extended period of time, post a message in The Helpdesk and we can help you work something out. There is no acceptable reason for logging into another person's account without specific permission from a GEWar mod or admin, and it can end up with both account being banned.
Accessing Somebody Else's Account
Stealing someone else's password, socially engineering your way into an account or hacking your way into someone's account (including private messages) is a very serious offense and will result in a ban of some variety.
Bad Sportsmanship
No data or information must be posted on the forums which may give an advantage to any other player/alliance over another. This is regardless of the source of the information, and indeed whether i is genuine or not!
What if I donated to the game?
Thank you for your donation, but if you cheat, script, spam or can't behave, you will earn a ban just the same as anyone else. Your donation will not be refunded.
Thanks for that post Steve. But that one is from the outdated file. Remember later on we made up new rules for the bannings.
Rudeness for example was shifted to mute, not ban. Same counts for bad sportmansship.
What I was trying to say is that people shouldn't be so affraid of a ban. If you don't cheat/script etc(check first post), or do any real illegal things(racism etc) you won't be banned. You might get muted for some time if you go to far or mute perm if you keep on doing it when your first mute is over :p
I was surprised that some people who don't cheat, are affraid of a ban.

Good tip. I got mute setup on co.uk now.
Tut tut - old posts not updated - oops!!
This thread is a bit more recent?

Yeah but our latest rules have never been made into an official post. That post you linked from 2007 would still allow bannings over forum posts or pm's. The new rules were only created behind the screens and uttered a few times in the middle of already existing threads :p
We never made an official statement. Also I think to not encourage forum agression as people would think they are safe(except for a mute). But now that I heard that some don't post out of fear of a ban, I thought it might be time for an official statement.

This make me laught!!!
:blush2
Can an admin hack my account?
What's up if an admin do this?
An admin or gepolice for example could change your password and then get into your account. You'd notice this by the fact that you can't login anymore as your password is changed.
No crewmember can secretly login your account. Try googling on vbulletin password. They are hashed, so impossible to get in the database. I once lost my own password on another vbulletin site i owned, and wanted to regain it as the email didn't work. Impossible.
If a crewmember had your password(you once told him or he/she guessed) and accessed your account without letting you know, then this is a bannable offense also. It's illegal in real life. That's called hacking. If he/she accesses it to test if your password is strong enough, and then let's you know right away, then it's ok.
You can always check if others are accessing your account by going to the security panel in the game itself: http://www.gewar.net/war/logging.php

Oh came on,
so if I know someone in real life and he ask me to join in(maybe coz he's out for a week or so) and just checking during this period, to put money in bank, plant resources and stuff??? Not talking about attacks or adding troops in a city....
Is this illegal?

I don't think so. I was allowed to do exactly that when posting on the helpdesk and asking.
Nope, it's not illegal. Not if you just let the gepolice know in a helpdesk query.
That way they know they don't have to investigate anything when they see another user access your account.
Basically the script doesn't say : player x planted resources for player y today.
It just says: player x accessed account player y
That rings an alarm. This way we can find hackers also. But what you state there is a rule that is very simple. I don't think it's hard for users to post it in the helpdesk. I also state that nobody who has forgotten that has ever been banned. But some have been put on resolution, in which case they just got a good scare and the resolution was always lifted when they explained why their account was accessed. No biggy. Just a rule to help us find the real cheaters.
