But... last I checked, the government doesn't block posts on forums :p

CNN and Fox are bad, but that doesn't mean you should be equally as bad.

Actually Lemonwarlord, there are words that you cannot use on these forums or the Chinese Government will put a block on this game.

The staff were always well aware of those words, it pulls a flag up, much like certain words do in the USA, and then the game would be blocked for the Chinese public.

the reason that there are english words are blocked is for censorship. There are kids playing this game.

but i can still say that australia is a messed up democracy. that the only time we ever vote is to vote in our prime minister and local counsels.... We didn't get to vote about fighting in the middle east! we voted about becoming a republic, the winning vote was to stay with the crown, but the government is still attempting to seperate us from the crown, even though the population was against it.

I feel that Keo is trying to say that they can't do this....

Does TRUE Democracy, "By the people, for the people" democracy, really exist in any country? Here in SA, as some of you know, we have had a democratic Government since 1994... yeah, right! In some ways this Government is very advanced, ie: The Civil Union act allowing for same-sex marriages and for 'minority' religions' marriages to be recognised, (I am a Pagan Marriage Officer under this law, allowing for Handfastings to be legal). But then there is the BEE Act, or Affirmative Action, a law that has caused most of the countries skilled labour to flee leaving us with poorly run infrastructure. Freedom of speech is allowed here and we can call our Government anything we like in any media, without recrimations... BUT in the important things, do they listen to 'the people'? Haha!!! Crime here is so bad that we are now classed as the most violent country in the world that is not at war and the people have called for stricter methods of dealing with crime, including the death sentence... but the Gov refuses to hold a referendum on the subject because it knows what will happen and is 'scared' of what the rest of the world will say if the Death sentence is introduced.
hmmm, nope TRUE democracy does NOT exist, and nor does TRUE freedom of speech in many countries. But SA IS way ahead there as we do have the latter....

As for the press.... They disgust me at times. I can bet most people NOT in SA don't hear the truth about what is going on here, just as we get a perverted truth about what is really going on in other countries. (The run-up to the American Elections for one, we hear some amazing stories here and I would LOVE to know how much is true). Thats what I like about international forums like this... we can at least learn SOME of the truth, (albeit possibly biased depending on the poster, lol).

It is a sad fact that we have to learn the truth through real people, instead of the press but

Since I am a football (soccer) fan and the World Cup is coming to SA, I have been hearing a lot about the crime and have been wondering how much of it is true. I've been hearing if the crime stays as bad as it is now, there is a possibility that they would move the World Cup somewhere else. As far as what the world has been hearing about our upcoming election, I would love to hear from you or anyone else about what you have been hearing. Feel free to send me PMs or links to articles in your countries about our election. I love to hear the international twist. One that I have heard so far has been from Iran and it was rather hilarious.

So when a flag pulls up you have to delete these words to avoid that chinese government blocks gewar? I would call that self-censorship. :sealed
I understand that it has to be done then, nevertheless it's an awful situation.

Now, That is where SA is a little ahead of most countries, we don't have censorship as such. We have no problems with websites in that manner.

For those that asked me for PM's regarding the state of affairs in SA, especially as you were thinking of coming here for 2010... I may have printed a bleak picture of what is a very beautiful and bountiful country, but it is not ALL bad...
But I would suggest that you keep an eye on the news as we are heading into a VERY uncertain stage at the moment.
I am a politically active person in the Human rights, animal rights and Religious rights arena and thus receive our Government Gazette daily, (Telling me of the movements and speeches etc of our Government ministers et al as well as any Documents, bills, acts etc being considered or passed) as well as the Government newsletter, (BUA News), and today I received the news that our President Mbeki has accepted the 'proposal' that he resign. (Unlike another certain president in a neighbouring country who refuses to relinquish power, lol). The African National Congress (ANC) made the 'request' he resign. Knowing this country, we may now go through a season of unrest... Possibly riots and all the usual stuff. (we are so used to it by now though).

Maybe the new President, more than likely Zuma of the famous shower story, will become the next president. AND He MAY be able to quell fears that many are showing about coming to SA. He has threatened, in pre-election run-ups, (we were supposed to go to the polls next year, not certain what will happen now), to clamp down on crime - HARD!!!!
So keep an eye on the news... It could be for the better, or it could be for the worse, only time will tell....

But either way, there will be no censorship :)
