I added "Coke" since people in the south call everything "coke"

Yet somehow you erased my vote for soda in doing so - good thing. Put it in for coke, since apparently now I can't.

If you ask for a "soda" a "pop" or a "soda pop" here in AU, all you'll get is blank stares and the person you asked thinking, "Stupid damn yank, wtf is he talkin bout?"

In France we say "coca", even if it's a pepsi...

I use cola for everything what is labeled cola. particularly coca cola but in germany there is also existing "club cola", "afri cola" and others.
pepsi is just pepsi.

:stop This isn't Coke vs. Pepsi... :stop
This is what do you call a carbonated flavored beverage which doesn't contain hops.
brobies point was that in the southern US, everything is a "coke"
orange, ginger ale, root beer, whatever, its all "a coke"

I do not think anyone believed it was Coke vs Pepsi. However Generic started this thread with a picture of a can of Pepsi and asked what everyone called it. In the UK we would call whatever the fizzy drink was by its name, so I responded as such. Suicidal is correct as well, because here soda, is just fizzy water. Maybe the thread is just aimed at the USA and I apologise if it was and should not have responded.

I call it "refrigerante" (in portuguese)

Literal translation from brazilian portuguese to english for this kind of drink:

soft drink.

Once it is not an option, I abstain from my vote.

It would be more like "refrigerator" :P
