The death count keeps rising. Monuments and antique places are being destroyed by the fire that keeps spreading and spreading.

There is an overlay for Google Earth to see the Greek Forest Fires from satellite images.
What makes it worse is that perhaps all fires were intenially started by people for several reasons.

fire terrorism :(
fire terrorism :(
It's a good way of saying it. Some say they might be lit to use the burned forests as a place for building. Some say it's just another way of terrorism or vandalism.
But they were practically all started at the same time.
No coincidence there.
Some arrests have been made.
A lot of people died. I say throw the guilty people in the towns that have been hurt most. Let the townspeople deal with them.
Its awful, I have been watching it on the news today, no reason behind it either from what I can see. We have some awful people in our world today perhaps they should be set alight, like for like, let them know what the people they murdered felt like when they started the fires. Because it is summer in Greece too and the land is so dry it is going to be very difficult to contain these fires, they are spreading rapidly.
Luke, the link doesn't seem to work for me. Then I checked it out and keyhole.com seems to be down. :(
Can you upload it locally?
What's really odd is I have not heard a thing about this in the news or from RSS feeds :/

For the past 5 years more than 25% of my country's forest was consumed by fire..
I think its really sick what some people do for money or just for fun..
The authorities should really investigate the culprits and bring them to justice..
This kind of things makes me really angry and sad..

Some people... there was one of those intentional fires over here a week ago, though no where near as big...
I hope those who made it out of their houses can get some shelter at least, or get a real home again.

I know the feeling, around here its the same thing..
And altough we have a law that forbids the constrution on burned areas for 10 years, after 3 or 4, a special authorization is given by some governamental institution..

We had a similar situation in Serbia, however with the help of our neighbors we estinguished it quite quickly. After doing so, we rushed to aid Greece as well.
All in all it was dealt with, its sad what some people do to terrorize a population but justice will be done!
Specter.
In Greece the law states that an existing forest can not be touched.
You can't throw it down for buildings or industry or anything.
Yet if it should happen to dissapear for any reason, including fires, you are allowed to build there if you own the land.
Does Serbia have the same laws?
As it seems that's what was the biggest reasons behind those fires in Greece.
Except for 1 old guy that just wanted to burn his garbage.

Luke,
I do not belive those laws exist in Serbia, I am not 100% sure on that however. It is possible that corporations did it but in my mind it would be a terrorist organization that did such a thing.
Maybe my viewpoint is coming from me being paranoid, maybe its just a crazy young man talking but in the history of the Balkans, one could easily suspect such a thing.

In the history of Greece, the men arrested are usually hired by landlords to do it for them.
Because the land is useless to landlords as long as it's protected by the law because of the forests and nature.

Luke,
In which case the Greek government would have files as to who owns the land. An investigation would follow. I highly doubt that one or a few landlords owned this land and decided to burn it as a team. Either way my heart goes out to the victims of this, too much at once for Greece. Hope they find the perpetrators and deal with them accordingly.

A lot of arrest have been made.
They did it remotely most of the time. With cans and using explosives to detonate them.
I hope those who did it get what they deserve.
They threw a country into financial despear, ruined nature, but above all cost a lot of innocent deaths.
And beyond that a lot are now homeless. Whole towns burned to the ground.

Absolutely ridiculus what they have caused. I hope Greece recovers from it quickly.

Well it s true luke but...there is more than that:
1/ It happened just before the elections or the election took part because of the fires. The fires could have brought a political change in the country but they didn t.
2/ Some people hate Greece and want it burned, destroyed, etc(no names here)
3/ Pyromanias, maybe Greeks but I suspect some foreigners...
4/ And last but not least a form of terrorism from the inside or the outside of the land
