I hadn't read the IMDB, but The A.V. Club, one of my most trusted places for movie reviews didn't have too much great to say about it. Admittedly, I'll probably see it.
Here's what I read: http://www.avclub.com/content/cinema/300
A fellow film buff of mine said it was nearly unbearable to watch :p .

In my opinion, "Zodiac" is the best movie in theatres right now.

Last I checked, angles and the technical aspects are what heightened the entertainment experience (if everything was shot with the same angle and no cuts or close ups or long shots, you can bet you'd be bored even by the most action-packed movie). In fact, I'm sure that 300's cinematographer was on crack cocaine when he worked on it. But hey, I'm sure everyone loves a bunch of one liners strung together by over-the-top CGI.

not like that..i have a friend going to RIT for film, and some movies i love he hates bc of slight things that "he would have done differently". movies are an art, everyone has a different view on art. if a movie is POTTYMOUTHty, i want to find out, not take the word of someone else

Some of my favorite movies are shot from the same angle, and really bad sound track, and pointless storyline and lots of s.....errrrrrrrrrr, lets say cars. :o

Most reviews about the movie are pretty darn good.
Those that have already told me have seen it are also enthousiastic about it.

I love the cinematic thing they've done here.
And as the last movie(yesterday) I saw was Snakes on a Plane(in my opinion the worst movie of 2006), it can't be that bad :).

Hmm.

Sorry to be a spoilt-sport, but I think not (http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/300)!

Metacritic is trustworthy.

53 out of 100 is bad.

I usually agree with IMDB. Though IMDB doesn't give Snakes On A Plane the award for worst movie...and I do.
But I still go by what I see and hear from others that have seen it.
And here in Holland it's a total hype. Critics are already calling it the movie of 2007, while we have just started the year.
So I can't say if it's really that good yet, but it makes me curious.
In a week I'll be able to say for sure.
I always loved that story, and the trailer is awesome...so it can't ever be that bad in my opinion.

I love the cinematic thing they've done here.

That's because of the work of this person: Frank Miller (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Miller_(comics)) he also worked on the movie Sin City, which also some people hated and some people love it. I liked Sin City, and can't wait to see 300

I'm definitely going to have to see this movie to make up my mind... The reviews are ALL over the place. I'll stop pooping on it 'til after I see it. Sin City *was* pretty good, but the whole ultra-violence thing is getting kinda old... For instance, Rodriguez and Tarantino with this new "Grind House (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3Gxqe0YQqk) " movie have me yawning.

Luke

I love historical movies.
Always loved the Spartan story about 300 men defeating an impossible army.

Overviolence is boring indeed, unless it is what history writes.
People claim the series Rome has too much violence...but what if it was like that? Others say it was much bloodier and writers made it less violent.

I just watched 300 tonight... My son and I have pretty much the same feeling about it.

Quite simply, one of the best movies I have seen in a Loooooooong time.

As far as the Cinematographer being on Crack - This is based off a Graphic Novel.. It is supposed to look like this. The shots were incredible, the action was great, and the characters were fantastic.

However...

I can see some people not "Getting It" as far as the look and feel of the film. To me, it made the movie Much better... But others maybe not.

My son and I (Heck even my wife) came out of that movie wanting to charge a hill, or face down an army or two. Movies with such great action make you come out of it with a high level of adrenaline that you feel indestructible.

Did I mention it was awesome? :-D

SPARTA!!!!

almost?

No my sir, this movie is far from the truth of Thermopylae. (take note that it is also made after a comic book)

I just saw it. I like it.
There might've been a lot of action in it, and the 'monsters' might've been weird...but the dialogues, music, acting and special effects were awesome.

Yeah? I'm off to see it in an half hour of so. We shall see what all the fuss is about.

The fuss is a little bit big...let's say I just wasn't dissapointed. It won't be an oscar winner(though perhaps for visuals), but I really enjoyed it.
Some might say there is too much action...but remember it's a warmovie...not a historical drama.
It clearly provides what you ought to expect: the 3 days of war Sparta vs Persia which were needed for Athens to gather their armies.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Thermopylae

And it might be hard to make a 2 hour movie(or comic) about a 3 day war, and in that they proved it could be done very well.
If you are not affraid of a lot of blood, and don't need a lot of sidestories to a movie, I can recommend this one.
Acting: 9/10
Music: 8/10
Visuals: 10/10
Directing: 9/10
Reality: 6/10
Story: 6/10
Overall: 8/10 for me in this category.

Frank Miller and Lynn Varley spins a really good story.
Its really good as a story.
I enjoyed the comic/graphic novel better...

Then again any book to movie translation always loses something.... can't be helped... there's only so much story you can tell in however many minutes your movie is.

I agree completely. I don't blame the movie producers when the movie is "Not as good as the book"... it just can't be helped.

What annoys me is when they take a good book and absolutely slaughter it for a movie (Starship Troopers).

I really do want to get the Graphic Novel now of 300. I saw it in the store before I saw the movie, but decided to wait. I wish I had grabbed it then.

That wasn not a slaughter it was a whole differnt plot. The removed every bit of the story line that did not involve bugs.

RAH would have had a stroke. A book about social responsability made into a movie about how to kill bugs

EXACTLY!! I nearly had conniptions when I saw it. They could have at LEAST kept in the armoured jump suits... but Noooooooooo.

:: Thunks his head ::

Speaking of the suits... if you have ever played Halo on X-Box (And who hasn't?), the Spartan suit is exactly how I pictured the suits when I was growing up.

I think the movie was better than the book. I've read the comic and liked it...but the movie showed emotions and fear of characters, in which the book failed in my opinion.

What I also noticed the last couple of days is that there are really a lot of members who are either quoting something of 300, or have signatures with quotes in it.
Never noticed that of other movies before.

OK, I'm going to see it on Saturday. It's only released in the UK on Friday or I would have seen it already.....I didn't realise it was Frank Miller! Looks like a mix between Sin City and LOTR......can't wait!

P.S. Average review: (from Metacritic) 300 is something to see, but unless you love violence as much as a Spartan, Quentin Tarantino or a video-game-playing teenage boy, you will not be endlessly fascinated.

I'm all three!:)

Luke
03-21-2007, 10:01 PM
It actually is a mix between those two.
The traitor Ephialtes here has become some Gollum.
Then there are your immortals, which reminded me of Orks.
Elephants...Xerxes is like a dark Saruman.

The king is not really aragorn though....the King is more agressive.
That slimy figure in the Senate reminded me of Grimah.
