I reckon it would be pretty useful to be able to specifically check how many troops your Allies' armies contain. Often both yourself and an alliance member send armies to capture a city (particularly newly created cities), and whilst you may have 100 troops, and they may have 1,000, there is no way to check how many troops he or she has, and whether or not you should allow him or her to go ahead and occupy the city, or conversely, if you have more troops and should not allow him/her to occupy the city.
Being able to check allied army troop numbers would also help alleviate army wastage, as if you can determine whether an ally has sufficient troops to defend/attack a city, you can send your own army onto a different target.

Although I agree, you can always PM the ally and ask and common sense should prevail. There won't always be this many new cities added everyday though - I'm back at work on tuesday for instance and now that this heat wave has passed (42 yesterday and 39 today), I really got clean my car out and do some other stuff I was supposed to do weeks ago (you know that whole life thing that really drags on this game).

There are such things as moles, and I personally wouldn't trust my info to every person in an alliance. All this information you're asking for can be attained through the classic pen and paper method.
With the PM and other modes of contact I too think that is sufficient.
