View Full Version : Delphia, Antarctica Luke 12-19-2005, 09:57 PM Well....that would be something new ;) Blitzkrieg 12-19-2005, 10:02 PM I'm sure Tara can give us a couple of towns to add in Terra Australis. dreadpr 12-20-2005, 02:49 AM Pick the cool names like Toowoomba, Wollongong, Gundagi, 1770, Wagga Wagga, Kalgoorlie, Tekapo (NZ)... ;) araT 12-20-2005, 02:53 AM Hahahaa.. sure! I hate to alarm you, but there are only 2 cities in all of Australia with a population over 1 million.. Melbourne with 1.1, and Sydney with 8.7.. the rest are hickville red-dirt village towns ;) What population range are you looking for and I'll see what I can come up with.. An interesting one to have would be Alice Springs, the town right near Uluru (Ayer's Rock) - 23°42′S 133°52′E - Pop: 28,178, originally an aboriginal community that has become a tourist hotspot, its beautiful out there in the big red outback T. dreadpr 12-20-2005, 03:10 AM Spoken like a true Sydneysider. Melbourne: 3.6m Sydney: 4.2m Brisbane: 1.7m (and growing by 1,200 per week) And we mustn't forget Wanneroo (WA) and their amazing growth spurt - 6,700 in one quarter earlier this year. No I don't know where Wanneroo is exactly... jammo 12-20-2005, 03:11 AM the rest are hickville red-dirt village towns ;) T. wow, i'm sure that might get one or two interesting responses, despite the smiley face! :D and yes dreadpr you beat me to it. I thought the population stats were a bit closer than previously quoted ;) dreadpr 12-20-2005, 03:16 AM Bloody New South Welshpeople... always feeling threatened and having to exaggerate their size ;) Luke 12-20-2005, 06:47 AM Now how did this get from a city on Antarctica to Australia? jammo 12-20-2005, 06:50 AM I'm sure Tara can give us a couple of towns to add in Terra Australis. Blitz started it! ;) dreadpr 12-20-2005, 06:59 AM Now how did this get from a city on Antarctica to Australia? Well we (Australia) control more of Antarctica than any other country anyway... and um... Yeah, blitz started it! Shadownation 12-20-2005, 09:02 AM Actually the UK was the first to claim some of Antartica and we own more land then anyone else there, and the surround islands! ;) Luke 12-20-2005, 09:10 AM I still wonder how we got to talk about Australian cities here when there was an Antarctica city request :p Shadownation 12-20-2005, 09:12 AM The great mysteries of the GEWAR forum... Blitzkrieg 12-20-2005, 09:43 AM I still wonder how we got to talk about Australian cities here when there was an Antarctica city request :p Nah, I'm with Luke on this one. This is DEFINITELY about Antarctica. Terra Australis "Sothern Land" was a title given to what cartographers of the time thought must exist in the southern hemisphere to counterweight against the land in the northern hemisphere (The earth used to be flat remember). The land was mostly antarctica and some thought Australia and noone knew anything about New Zealand - They obviously didn't get Xena Warrior Princess and the Lord of the Rings..... I was trying to be witty and intelligent, both failed ...... miserabley ....... again ....... Oh look, something shiny over there! Luke 12-20-2005, 09:57 AM I was trying to be witty and intelligent, both failed ...... miserabley ....... again ....... Oh look, something shiny over there! HAHAHAHAHAHHAHA that one is fresh araT 12-20-2005, 10:02 AM Oh look, something shiny over there! Where??! WHERE???? WWWHHHEEERRREEE!!!!!  T. dreadpr 12-21-2005, 12:32 AM SHINY! </Serenity moment> dreadpr 12-21-2005, 01:00 AM Actually the UK was the first to claim some of Antartica and we own more land then anyone else there, and the surround islands! ;) <nitpicky> Actually no-one OWNS land on Antarctica though seven countries have claims (predominantly for resource rights of course). I'll spare you the boring details about the treaties and the like and the fact that some countries who are yet to make a claim have reserved the right to. But here's a map of the claimed territories and associated countries(http://freespace.virgin.net/p.hazlett/66deg/politics.html) and although you're right about the UK being the first, it doesn't have the largest claim/responsibility. </nitpicky> Blitzkrieg 12-31-2005, 07:19 AM McMurdo Station, Antarctica is possible, besides that............. Dunno I'll give it 1000 population (it's summer peak) coordinates approx -78.26 166.53 It should be about there, I don't think Google has mapped the settlements on Antarctica. araT? araT 12-31-2005, 07:22 AM Nope, its not mapped - entire antactica is low res, but there is a KML on GEHacks with all the antactic bases ;) Please do add McMurdo, though, sounds great! shall I lock/move this thread now? T. araT 12-31-2005, 07:38 AM ADDED, LOCKED & MOVED T. |
