I'm sure Tara can give us a couple of towns to add in Terra Australis.

Hahahaa.. sure! I hate to alarm you, but there are only 2 cities in all of Australia with a population over 1 million.. Melbourne with 1.1, and Sydney with 8.7.. the rest are hickville red-dirt village towns ;)

What population range are you looking for and I'll see what I can come up with..

An interesting one to have would be Alice Springs, the town right near Uluru (Ayer's Rock) - 23°42′S 133°52′E - Pop: 28,178, originally an aboriginal community that has become a tourist hotspot, its beautiful out there in the big red outback

Spoken like a true Sydneysider.

Melbourne: 3.6m
Sydney: 4.2m
Brisbane: 1.7m (and growing by 1,200 per week)

And we mustn't forget Wanneroo (WA) and their amazing growth spurt - 6,700 in one quarter earlier this year.

No I don't know where Wanneroo is exactly...

Well we (Australia) control more of Antarctica than any other country anyway...

Yeah, blitz started it!

Actually the UK was the first to claim some of Antartica and we own more land then anyone else there, and the surround islands! ;)

I still wonder how we got to talk about Australian cities here when there was an Antarctica city request :p

Nah, I'm with Luke on this one. This is DEFINITELY about Antarctica.

Terra Australis "Sothern Land" was a title given to what cartographers of the time thought must exist in the southern hemisphere to counterweight against the land in the northern hemisphere (The earth used to be flat remember). The land was mostly antarctica and some thought Australia and noone knew anything about New Zealand - They obviously didn't get Xena Warrior Princess and the Lord of the Rings.....

I was trying to be witty and intelligent, both failed ...... miserabley ....... again ....... Oh look, something shiny over there!

<nitpicky>

Actually no-one OWNS land on Antarctica though seven countries have claims (predominantly for resource rights of course). I'll spare you the boring details about the treaties and the like and the fact that some countries who are yet to make a claim have reserved the right to. But here's a map of the claimed territories and associated countries(http://freespace.virgin.net/p.hazlett/66deg/politics.html) and although you're right about the UK being the first, it doesn't have the largest claim/responsibility.

McMurdo Station, Antarctica is possible, besides that............. Dunno

I'll give it 1000 population (it's summer peak)
coordinates approx -78.26 166.53

It should be about there, I don't think Google has mapped the settlements on Antarctica.

araT?

araT

Nope, its not mapped - entire antactica is low res, but there is a KML on GEHacks with all the antactic bases ;)

Please do add McMurdo, though, sounds great!

shall I lock/move this thread now?
