Okay, this isn't just for cotton, it's for all the resources. I've just been talking on the IRC channel and TheBull suggested this:

Instead of having a fixed time of 36 hours, could there instead be a re-planting time that started at (say) 12 hours, then increased by (say) 2 hours each time it was done until it had reached a fixed maximum, like 36 hours?

I like the idea since it allows new players to get into the game faster. I know I sat around waiting for that timer to expire many a night, and had to go through that cycle several times before I had a daily income that was sufficient to go after a city.

At the same time, it doesn't give a geo advantage to the new players. They still can't ever get a higher resource income than an established player.

Great idea. It was suggested back at GEH, but I'll forgive you, since it was so long ago.

It was suggested before, but a LOT of players were against it.

Their explanation:
Big players would get crushed by all newbies who would be upto strength much faster. I heard big players are having a tough time already with all the new players.
Also I think we might have a problem with fake accounts again.
People would just set up 10 fake accounts as they get money more easily then their existing account.

It has been suggested mmmaaannnyyy times. When I saw it, I went "Oh no, not AGAIN". (Do a search for Resource Timer (http://www.gewar.net/forums/search.php?searchid=2254))

But yes, what Luke said are main reasons.

Anyway, what is wrong with the current time limit?

what is wrong, i think, is that most people go on at a certain time and dont like the day and a half and would prefer not to have to come on morning night etc. whebn it can be hard.
i agree with luke though

I'm not saying that new players should be able to get their daily income up within the first day, but to be honest, i've been playing this game for 3 weeks and have owned a city for 2 hours. it really isn't that fun. I just check in every 36 hours to plant, but beyond that the game is extremely boring because i don't have the 2500 geos that it will take to get and hold a city.

Maybe the problem could be countered by giving people that start late some pre plated fields? OR, for every 100 jewels you find you get to plant a field without waiting the 26 hrs as a bonus.

Multi accounts will always be a problem. please develop good tools to fight them as that will save your game.

I believe that threre are options. And please, tell me how a new person is a threat to a big player! that is lame.
