Hippotree 03-26-2009, 09:45 AM my geography teacher taught us that there are 11 offcial languages in south africa.
Ce vrai?
You guys speak Africaans but it seems Zulu has the most speakers in SA.
Starbuck 03-26-2009, 09:53 AM yes hippotree there are 11 languages in Afrika, it's mostly the blacks that speak all of them, we speak afrikaans and english mostly!!
I want to learn zulu and xhosa though :)

no lol different black cultures speak different languages just like anywhere else in the world ... I meant that whites speak either english or afrikaans we don't get brought up to speak a black language
http://www.southafrica.info/about/people/language.htm
sagetab 03-26-2009, 11:25 AM All official languages are: Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, siSwati, Tshivenda, Xitsonga, Afrikaans, English, Ndebele, Xhosa and Zulu.
PLUS: Languages approved by the Pan South African Language Board (PANSALB) and the South African Certification Authority (SAFCERT) such as braille and South African Sign Language.
Most blacks know SOME English, but a lot don't.
Most whites know a word or 2 of the local African Language, which is different in different areas of the Country, Zulu being the main one in Durban so I know a smattering of it - enough to hold a rudimentary conversation.
Indians speak English and the majority dont know a word of Hindi or Tamil. About 90% of my friends, assosiates et al are Indian - But Durban is the home of a VERY Large Indian community - One of which I am actually moving into in a few weeks time :)
We are a diverse nation, hence nicknamed the 'Rainbow Nation', and visiting here you can have a HUGE Cultural education, of several cultures, All in one city... :)
w_african 03-26-2009, 11:46 AM Since we lived south of Durban we were in a zulu area. I only know a few words and my biggest regret was not learning it while I was young...I still plan to learn it someday. My father and all my brothers are fluent in zulu except my older brother who speaks fluent shona (spoken in Zimbabwe). You kinda need to know zulu when you operate a farm in KZN province.

it seems There is very few communications between blacks and whites in your nation since you don't even speak each other's language. It's unbelievable. thenyour newspaper and TV programs are seperate in the same city.
sagetab 03-26-2009, 01:00 PM The language barrier is being sorted. Primary school children have to learn a second language, English if it is not your first language, Afrikaans if it is - and 1 local African language. My children all learn Zulu at school and my oldest daughter is quite fluent in it.
There are newspapers in most of the official langiages although mainly Xhosa and Zulu - most of the other African languages are similar to these 2 in many ways so can usually understand each other.
TV has shows in all languages. There are no channels for each language but rather a spectrum of programmes covering the main languages. The news is read in all languages as well. (Plus sign language).
There is a sort of pideon English that everyone uses though - and we manage to converse quite well with it....

Can you see wild lions eating herbivores in SA?
sagetab 03-26-2009, 01:45 PM Lions, and all game, are kept in Game reserves where they are afforded protection from poachers, to the best of the abilities of the game rangers, and are not a danger to mankind. You wont find Lions, Elephants etc in our gardens :)
Monkeys and baboons a-plenty - usually raiding our kitchens, even opening our fridges, lol.
To see big game, you can go to www.africam.com (http://www.africam.com) or www.africam.co.za (http://www.africam.co.za) where there are live cams set up in the Kruger National Park and in other game parks.
We also have zoos - an institution that I have ambiviliant feelings about.
Besides the monkeys, a few buck, (deer), and rock dassies, (rock rabbits), meerkats, (a sort of mongoose or Gopher), and other small creatures that you may find in a back yard, you will need to go to a Game reserve to observe the wildlife, including the big 5 that SA is honoured to home.

Nice, you have your own church too.

I've really picked up a lot from this church.

w_african 04-22-2009, 05:32 PM Hey did all the South African's on here go out and vote...been following it religiously all day...looks like some minor problems so far and shortage of ballots at a few stations where the opposition are going to do well.
How did your voting go? Long lines?
foskasse 04-22-2009, 05:45 PM I heard that the "a wash a day, keeps the aids way" retarded cupcakes would probably win.
is that true?

Most likely, however its a very important election as one opposition party (DA) has a chance of taking over the Western Cape (a South African province - Cape Town is located within this province). Also its important that the ruling ANC party is restricted to under 2/3 majority so they can't change the constitution. It will also be interesting to see how well the breakaway party (COPE) does...

They can change the constituion like that?
Just for having a maority in parlamient?
Thats brilliant.I wanted to be president of one of those countries.
i would change the constitution, and I would not only put myself in power forever, but also declare me a living god and make every statement i made to be made true by law.
sagetab 04-22-2009, 07:19 PM Well, they say that if Zuma becomes our next president then SA will become another Zimbabwe. I hope and pray it's not true, but Zuma is anti-white, Anti-international influence, practically anti-everything except that the black man can rule the country without any help!!!
There was suprisingly very little violence these elections, maybe a good sign.
The only violence I saw was when the ANC campaign bus interfered with the Hari Krishna Fastival Of Chariots the weekend before last, where I was manning the Medical Hut - Fortunately the Police chased them.
PS: Last weekend I heard the Hari Krishna Mantra sung in 1 000 000 different ways, from traditional Indian to Rave!!! Talk about a rainbow Nation :) Got some great pics and videos though! This is really THE most amazing country with its many cultures and traditions... I sure hope Zuma, if he does get in, doesn't ruin it!!!

zuma has 4 wifes!!!
erotic guy!!!
Starbuck 04-23-2009, 12:20 PM Helen Zille better be the Western Capes mayor again :p
I don't want to be negative here but Zuma basically already won... There is no way that the ANC wont win the election :(
w_african 04-23-2009, 01:11 PM The preliminary results are extremely encouraging but I guess its probably too early to say for sure. Preliminary votes say the opposition has kept the ANC from 2/3 majorty and also between 48-51% of the Western Cape vote. Hopefully by tonight we will have a better understanding of the end-game. Start getting use to saying President Zuma though :(
w_african 04-23-2009, 01:28 PM Results with 1/3 of all votes counted:
ANC: 65%
Democratic Alliance: 19%
Cope: 8%
Polling stations declared: 38%
Turnout: 77%
Source: IEC
Its going to be close. Need to keep ANC below 66%...

Highlights
*ANC did NOT win the required 2/3 majority to change the constitution. Very very good news and will bring stability to South Africa (we hope!).
*The ANC won 8 of 9 provinces, the exciting news is that the largest opposition (DA) won the Western Cape province (i.e., Cape Town is the main city there) with 51.23% of the vote.
*Another opposition party called COPE that split from the ANC and is only 100 days old managed to get 1.3million votes and 30 seats in Parliament. Not bad for a very new party...thats 10k+ voters a day that they recruited.
*Elections were free & fair with only minor issues which is excellent and bodes well for democracy in Africa.
*Although the ANC won a convincing victory again, the opposition parties (except for the IFP who faltered in KZN - WA, sagetab & snails home province) are becoming stronger and managed to limit the ANC powers this time around to protect the constitution. If the oppositions growth patterns continue we will see a very close election results in the future (maybe even a change in government within 20 years). It took Zimbabwe 20 years for a real opposition to emerge and challenge the ruling liberation party...we are only 15 years into democracy.
Starbuck 04-27-2009, 01:13 PM We have the Western Cape ;woop ;woop
w_african 04-27-2009, 05:03 PM We have the Western Cape ;woop ;woop
yeah i'm excited too...I'm looking forward for the opportunty for the DA to demonstrate what it can do. They have an awesome opportunity to improve safety, economic development and build houses for the poor. I only hope that if they do improve in these areas that the rest of South Africans will take notice :)
I've got to say that after the election results I'm more optimistic about the country than before. I bet that alot others are thinking the same thing.
Snail 04-30-2009, 08:41 AM im so glad the ANC didnt get the 2/3 majority, that was the best news i have heard from government in 4 years ha ha ha,but onto a serious note, there was several irregularities during the voting (my next door neighbor is in parliament so it was interesting to hear what was happening).
1) ANC was campaigning outside polling stations (i saw the pics my neighbor received) and i saw it personally, and it is illegal in SA to do that.
2) Several ballet boxes were either...
a) Found in IEC members cars full of votes that were never suposed to be there (an investigation revealed that several IEC members were siding with the ANC and detained votes of opposition parties).
b) A ballet box full of votes pertaining for IFP were found by a pedestrian....the box had been dumped.
3) there was a gun fight between IFP members and ANC members, and there was irregularities from feedback at the seen, therefore i was contacted by my neighbor to get hold of my cousin as he was involved in the gun fight and they needed a credible witness as the story from 1 of the parties (we can only guess which party it was) was inaccurate according to eye witnesses.
4) If you made a mark outside of the lines where you were supposed to of ticked for your party then they would not accept the ballet paper!
now to be honest with all this into consideration i dont think it was a very fair election, but im just happy that the ANC didnt get their 2/3 majority vote;)
